This article in the NYT today is about how parts of the Catholic community are disillusioned with the Pope after his bad calls involving one priest who denies the Holocaust, and another who blamed Hurricane Katrina on the sins of New Orleans.
People are entitled to their beliefs, of course. As a non-believer I am constantly amazed that:
(1) these institutions based on made-up stories that are a matter of pure faith have survived so long, even as science and technology have clearly been able to answer many things that were previously seemingly inexplicable and required the invocation of gods and monsters.
(2) that their massive bureauracies, faced with existential threat as congregations decline, seem completely out of touch with their mass market prospects and accordingly market their wares so poorly. They should hire some competent consumer marketing droids from P+G or some other global brand, and manage like professionals.
(3) that in the midst of global financial crises, secular governments whose agenda includes science, education and long term investments to grow GDP and keep people employed don't start to tax religious institutions; moving the wealth away from bigots and sourcerers towards people who use the great body of human knowledge to advance the world, instead of to retard it through superstition, supposition and prejudice.
Oh and talk about great ad targeting: look at one the NYT ad server was running atop this article when I read it LOL
